(A)broad Mind

by Laila Zohdy, on Jan 22, 2019 12:21:07 PM

Ever since I was a child, I have been an expat. I was born and raised in Cairo for the first 7 years of my life, which I don’t remember at all. I moved away from my country  to Saudi Arabia, where I attended an African school and was exposed to a multicultural society from a young age. After 10 years of living abroad, we moved back to our home country as a family. Growing up in a different country has shaped my perceptions of life differently from everyone I know who hasn’t left Egypt.

At the age of 18 I decided to move again and start all over, but this time away from the region and society that I have been accustomed to. Almost two years into my journey now, I can say that I have changed so much in terms of finding myself and purpose. That’s why I decided to make my radio piece about who I am compared to who I used to be.

I talked to three different people, all of whom had different life journeys but I found one thing in common between me and them, it’s the fact that something about them changed through travel.

Get to know three people who decided to pack up and start over in a new destination far from home.

Laila-BrazThais Duarte

Thais is a 27 year old Brazilian who moved to Prague in winter of 2017. She studied film study and photography for 4 years. Currently, she went for a career shift and decided to teach English to little kids. After living her entire life in Sao Paolo, Brazil, Thais decided to move to Prague to start fresh away from what is all familiar to her. She celebrated her one year anniversary in November and she’s excited to see what happens next from there.

Laila-AmericanNicole Adelman

Nicole is a 40 year American who has been living in Prague for 4 years so far. Nicole has her own theatre production company CATNIP, which is located in the heart of Prague’s city center. Nicole is originally from Chicago but has lived and studied in many parts of the United Sates, making her a traveller from a young age.

Don Gordon

Laila-DanGordon is a 44 year old Irish man in Prague. Gordon has been a traveller since the age of 17 and has lived in 18 countries so far. He runs his own business in Prague, owning a small space in the ground floor of a hostel which he uses to hold arts and music events. He’s a believer in the luck of the Irish and the universal concept of Karma.
