Tom Hamilton-Shaw is a public policy strategist at UK, European and global levels. He studied Philosophy at the University of Bristol, specializing in political philosophy, before gaining his MSc in International Development. Since graduating he has spent time learning the political game at the coalface of British political life.
He has worked in the UK Parliament as an aide to the former Labour Minister for Work and Pensions (The Rt Hon. James Purnell MP) and as a researcher for the former Leader of the House of Commons and Lord Privy Seal (The Rt Hon. Harriet Harman MP).
Since leaving Parliament in 2010, he has spent time as an advisor to a number of high-profile, international think tanks and Non-Governmental Organizations in policy and public affairs positions. These include the international affairs institute Chatham House and, most recently, the British Red Cross where he has been employed to advocate for change for refugees and asylum-seekers in the UK.
Tom is currently the Policy and Advocacy Manager where he specializes in relieving humanitarian suffering by garnering policy and practice change from the UK Government.
He will be talking about how to influence governments and powerful people through advocacy work and how to get a job doing it. He will also be available for personal views on the UK General Election in May 2015.
