In May 2016, a group of HND graphic design students made a weekend trip to Dresden, Germany, in the company of our lecturer Paul DeLave. They covered the chronological spectrum of art, including several hours at the Old Masters' Gallery and viewing many wonderful pieces from the Renaissance, including works by Rafael, Titian, Cranach and Vermeer. At the restored Albertinum, late 19th century as well as 20th and 21st century works are on display, including sculpture and installation art.
Dresden’s Baroque Altstadt (Old Town) is a bustling urban centre, with an interesting mix of old and new architecture. The city was heavily bombed in World War II, but many valuable historic buildings were spared, and the iconic Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady) was completely rebuilt and restored. In the Neustadt (New Town) across the Elbe River, we explored the broad pedestrian boulevards, terrace restaurants and indoor markets, while several students searched successfully for 'authentic' street art.
