Helena Jakoube, who came to Prague College to pursue a BA in Graphic Design, has won a coveted YCN award for her design brief for London’s Royal Court Theatre.

In total, there were 125 submissions for the Royal Court project, of which Helena’s was selected as one of the three winners. Helena’s concept, praised by the Royal Court’s Head of Marketing Becky Wootton for its ingenuity and simplicity, was to illustrate the life journey of a play from cradle to stage, showing how a piece of theatre in ‘born’ in a competitive world where it has to vie for attention with thousands of others, before finally being selected for rehearsal at a theatre.

What was attractive about this particular project?

One important feature of the brief was to show aspects of putting on a play which are not often seen by the public - selection, editing and rehearsing - aspects which I was able to research with the help of behind-the-scenes workers at the Vinohrady Theatre.” Following the gala presentation at the Marriot Hotel in London’s Grosvenor Square, Helena told us “I feel really great - it’s particularly satisfying when someone you’ve never met before judges your work, and even more so when the selection process is anonymous”.

What have you learnt from this experience?

I’ve gained so much self-confidence from the Prague College course and from this whole process. I’d love to go on to work on more collaborative creative projects, as a graphic designer either in Prague or elsewhere in Europe.
