Differing Accents Conference - Day 4

by admin, on 03 September 2012 12:03:13 CEST

The final day of the conference featured four important names: Oliver Linke, Colin Brignall, Filip Blažek and Richard Kindersley.

Oliver Linke, graphic designer, instructor and writer, delivered a lecture on "The Urge to Rule." The lecture dealt with type becoming digital; shaping through mathematical equations, and moving from lettercutting to sets of pixels. Oliver illustrated his talk with his own work on book and type design.

Colin Brignall, typeface designer and winner of a prestigious award from the Type Directors Club (the TDC Medal 2000) in recognition of his services to typography, delivered a lecture on "The Liberated Letter." The talk recognized the freedoms that arose once the constraints imposed by lead type were lifted - for example Letraset's then-revolutionary 'dry transfer' type.

Filip Blažek is a full-time graphic designer and co-author of Praktická typografie (Typography in practice). As owner of the Typo.cz server, dedicated to Czech and international graphic design, he delivered a fascinating lecture on "European Diacritics." The lecture worked as a visual guide to the world of European accents and how to design correct diacritical marks.

Richard Kindersley, a renowned British letterer and sculptor who has been commissioned for many of Britain’s most important lettering projects -  including the M25 Queen Elizabeth Bridge over the Thames at Dartford, and inscriptions for St. Paul's and Westminster Abbey in London - delivered a lecture on Letter Carving. Richard presented a rich portfolio of his own work and talked about his career as both a letterer and sculptor, including his award-winning brick carving. As part of his presentation, he demonstrated the art of carving in stone as part of a live broadcast.
