Meet Calvin, an MSc International Management graduate

by Larissa Petryca, on 03 September 2024 11:04:33 CEST

Calvin Valla completed his MSc in International Management in February 2024 and is set to officially graduate in October. Following his studies, he relocated to Belgium, where he has joined a graduate program as a Country Analyst for a prominent French fast-food chain.

Can you describe your career journey and what led you to pursue your Master's at PCU?

My career journey began in Lyon, where I pursued a Bachelor's degree in Quantitative Management at IAE Lyon. In my final year, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Hong Kong at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, where I focused on entrepreneurship and international management. This experience ignited my desire to continue my education in an international environment, which led me to PCU's MSc International Management programme.

Why did you choose to study in Prague?

I chose Prague for its central location, vibrant atmosphere, and strong international connections. The city is filled with international residents, and English is widely spoken which made it easier to integrate. Additionally, Prague's affordability was a significant advantage as a student, allowing me to focus more on my studies and enjoy the city's offerings.

How did the programme influence your professional development and career trajectory?

The programme was instrumental in aligning my passion for food with my career goals. I am now involved in the global expansion of a fast-food chain. During my studies I gained valuable management skills specific to the food sector and learned various models that I now apply in my professional life as a new country analyst. Additionally, the exposure to different cultures equipped me to work effectively in international companies where diverse cultural perspectives are present.

Calvin actively participated in university activities, most notably PCU’s International Students Association

One key skill I developed during the programme was project management, which has become essential in my daily work. In addition, working in a multicultural environment, I frequently collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and combined with my project management training, my experiences have enabled me to navigate these differences successfully, fostering effective teamwork and adaptability.

How important were the School of Business academics in growing your professional and academic competencies?

The School of Business was crucial in supporting my dissertation, which focused on developing a new dish in Prague. The faculty provided valuable resources and guidance throughout the project, helping me refine my ideas and achieve my goals.

What kind of opportunities did you enjoy outside of the classroom at the university?

I particularly enjoyed participating in associations such as the International Student Association. This involvement allowed me to meet new people, explore different cultures, and contribute to creating an environment where newcomers to the city felt welcomed and supported by a community of friends.

What advice would you give to someone contemplating a Master's degree in Business?

I would strongly encourage pursuing a Master's degree as it offers the opportunity to develop your own projects with the backing of the university. Completing my dissertation gave me a unique story to share with HR managers, which made a significant difference in my job applications. Companies appreciate candidates with a personal story, and my Master's project provided just that, giving me an edge in the competitive job market.
