Australian Football, AFL, footy or Aussie Rules is the most played sport in Australia and has some of the highest spectator numbers across the world. The good news? It’s played right here in Prague by both men and women and PCU students and staff are especially invited to come give it a try.
History in Prague
Aussie Rules has been present in Prague for well over 10 years and over that time the quality of football played here and across Europe has increased. Almost all countries in Europe have a men’s and women’s competition, and there are several international tournaments across the calendar year.
Here in Prague, the national team is the Prague Dragons and apart from international tournaments, they play regular games against close neighbours in Dresden, Vienna and Poland. Domestically there are 2 teams, the Prague Devils and Prague Golems, competing for honours in the Czech Cup every year. The playing season usually starts in March and lasts until the snow covers the ground!
Players come from many different countries and abilities and the coaches are Australian and have the knowledge and understanding of the game to teach beginners the basics of the game. Training is typically twice a week –weekdays in Prague 9 and Saturdays in Riegrovy Sady right opposite PCU’s Polska Campus. Social events are of course a big part of the Club so its not just about footy!
