The workshop dealt with the relationship between business and human rights. The speakers - Mr Filip Gregor, lawyer and chairman of the European Coalition for Corporate Justice, and Ms. Lenka Pitronova, campaign coordinator for Amnesty International Czech Republic - discussed the gravity of oil spills and gas flaring in the Niger Delta region. Royal Dutch Shell has accepted responsibility for only two spills since 2008, but has not cleaned up the Delta, which it is obliged to do by the Nigerian law. The focus of the workshop was also on a broader context of multinational corporations’ legal impunity and what can affected communities do to receive legal remedy.
