Lecturer introduces independent movie at One World Festival

by admin, on 05 September 2012 18:21:44 CEST

Paul DeLave, who lectures in the School of Art and Design at Prague College, was the moderator in a discussion of the independent movie 'Detroit - A Wild City', screened at the Lucerna cinema in Prague as a part of the One World Festival

The movie, directed by Florent Tillon (FR), shows how life in a metropolitan city changed dramatically after the economic crisis, turning the town from "Motor City" to "Murder Capital". In the last ten years, a quarter of the population has left the city of Detroit. The abandoned Art Nouveau city, with decaying monuments of once-famous American industry, has now become a symbol of crisis of capitalism. However, the movie gives new hope to people who live in the city by showing activities of those who try to make the city a better place to live, for example by converting abandoned factories into farming communities. In Tillon's eyes the city has been transformed into a place where people look for a new way to live.

After the screening, Paul DeLave moderated an interesting discussion, bringing in his personal experience of being brought up in the city and living there for many years.
