1. Visit the statue of Karel Hynek Macha
The John Keats of Prague, Macha was born in 1810 and died aged only 26 from pneumonia after helping to put out a wild fire in Moravia. Dying young was not the only thing that made him the nation's favourite Romantic writer, however. He was also the author of a long epic love poem called 'May', a homage to the beauty of the Spring. Lovers traditionally make their way to Macha's statue on Petrin Hill to reaffirm their affection for one another. Those of a more morbid nature might like to go and lay a flower on his grave at Vysehrad cemetery.
2. Take a look at the foundations of the biggest Stalin in the world
For the first time since 1990, when it hosted ground-breaking art shows and club nights, the huge underground chamber below the plinth of Letna Hill on which the metronome stands will be opened by the Prague authorities. The current kinetic art installation is a relative newcomer - many years ago in the same place you could gaze up at the biggest statue of Stalin in the world. The chamber will be open tomorrow, on a first-come, first-served basis. Be aware that the queues may be very long, so get there in time!

4. See Martin Zet's exhibition in Plzen
If you happen to be travelling on 1 May, why not pop into Plzen (Pilsen) to see 'Labor Day', an exhibition by our art lecturer Martin Zet? It opens at 5pm at the Gallery of the City of Pilsen, nam. Republiky 40. The exhibition will be launched by the gallery's director Zuzana Motlova, and Milos Vojtechovsky will give a speech to launch the show. In the following week, the gallery is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 6pm.
