Summer School - Wireless Networks

Wireless Networks

Format: Hybrid

This course is for those to anyone who is interested in wireless networks and technology. No previous skills or special software are necessary.

The topics covered in this course are:

  • antennas and electromagnetic waves
  • working with decibels: dBm, dBi, dBd and dB
  • modulation: amplitude, frequency, phase
  • spread spectrum: FHSS, DSSS, OFDM
  • access to shared wireless channel: FDMA, TDMA, CDMA
  • autonomous WiFi and enterprise Wifi (controller based): a, b, g, n, ac, ax (WiFi 1 - 6)
  • enterprise WiFi roaming (intra and inter controller)
  • borderless WiFi provisioning
  • security and monitoring for enterprise WiFi networks

Lab activities based on Cisco devices and technologies:

  • cloud-based, controller-based and autonomous provisioning of Cisco Aironet accesspoints
  • spectral analysis
  • monitoring WiFi networks
  • sniffing
This is a practical course and after the presentation of the theory, you will have the opportunity to see and touch different kinds of antennas, understand how they work, how they radiate energy and how they should be installed properly. You will engage in calculating which types of devices, antennas and cabling is most suited for your deployment.
You will have the opportunity to play with a spectral analyser which costs 40000 Euro, which is used in the surveys of large WiFi deployments. Also, you will be able to deploy a WiFi network based on a controller (the kind is used in enterprises).

You will study 4 hours a day from Monday to Thursday, over three weeks.

When: 20 June to 8 July 2022

Format: In-person
