Latest Research Programmes and Engagement Areas

Human Resources & Employability

This research programme encompasses several critical focus areas that address the evolving dynamics of the modern workforce and business ecosystems. A primary area of investigation is centered on the employee experience, specifically analyzing the implications of business digitalization on work styles, employee well-being, and productivity. This strand seeks to explore how technological advancements are reshaping workplace practices, with a particular emphasis on understanding the challenges and opportunities that digital tools and platforms present for enhancing employee satisfaction and organizational performance. Another significant area of inquiry focuses on identifying and leveraging new talent pools to address workforce demands. This involves developing strategies to create inclusive pathways for marginalized groups to access the labor market, thereby fostering diversity and equity within the workforce. Simultaneously, the program examines how such initiatives can support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in meeting their employment needs, addressing skills shortages, and driving economic growth. By bridging the gap between marginalized communities and business labor requirements, this research aims to contribute to the development of sustainable and socially responsible employment practices. Overall, this program seeks to generate actionable insights that align workforce development with organizational goals, ensuring that businesses remain adaptable and inclusive in the face of technological and societal transformations.

Financial Economics and Regulation

This research programme is designed to address several critical areas of inquiry within the domain of banking and financial regulation. A primary strand is the examination of banking regulation, particularly with regard to capital requirements and the imposition of law enforcement penalties. This area of research seeks to analyze the interplay between regulatory frameworks and their effectiveness in maintaining financial stability, with particular attention to the mechanisms through which capital adequacy standards are enforced. Additionally, the research explores policy implications related to the standardization of penalty systems for financial misconduct, with an emphasis on economic sanctions. This aspect of the program investigates how a harmonized approach to penalties might enhance regulatory consistency and mitigate disparities across jurisdictions, ultimately promoting a more cohesive global financial system. Another central strand of this program involves the analysis of regulatory and law enforcement penalty announcements and their subsequent impact on the efficiency of financial markets. This includes assessing how such announcements might influence market behavior, investor confidence, and the broader implications for financial market performance. By evaluating the signaling effects and market dynamics triggered by these regulatory interventions, the main aim is to provide valuable insights into the intersection of law enforcement actions and market efficiency. Overall, this research program endeavors to contribute to a deeper understanding of the regulatory environment's role in fostering robust and efficient financial systems, addressing both theoretical and practical dimensions of contemporary financial governance.

English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) / Global Englishes (GEs) and Intercultural Communication

The research programme is divided into two key areas: English as a Lingua Franca (ELF)/Global Englishes (GEs) & ELT methodology and (applied linguistics). At the moment, several projects listed below are a priority.

In the realm of ELF/GEs we have strongly contributed to fostering and expanding the ELF/GEs research community by organizing and hosting ELF14 2024, the most important international conference on the topic globally. The ELF/GEs research “cell” at SoD functions as a unique awareness raising body in Central Europe. We promote ELF/GEs ideas among Czech researchers but more importantly among English language teachers.

Currently, the two main projects include, first, a systematic review of ELF-in-interaction, utilizing the protocol developed by Parry and Land (2013) for CA-based studies to cover a gap between Conversation Analysis (CA) and ELF research. Secondly, we are compiling a handbook for teachers and teacher trainers with ready-to-use literature-based lesson plans which promote linguistic diversity, transcultural sensitivity and linguistic creativity. Finally, we wish to complete a unique student-tutor driven action research on emotions in L2 creative writing.
