LGBTQI+
Coming to Prague can be a liberating and eye-opening experience for many of us. The city’s reputation as a welcoming and open community offers a sense of belonging. However, it can also bring moments of confusion or uncertainty, especially as we navigate our identities within this diverse environment.
It is essential to foster an inclusive society where everyone feels accepted and respected, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Despite Prague's welcoming nature, LGBTQI+ discrimination remains a significant issue worldwide. As educators, we are committed to combining empathy with action to build a friendly and supportive environment for all.
At times, it can be challenging not only to seek assistance in understanding and embracing our identities but also to guide loved ones who want to offer support but don’t know where to begin. Many may feel overwhelmed by inclusive language and terminology, unsure of how to proceed. To help bridge this gap, we’ve compiled a list of resources and organizations designed to provide guidance and support.
What Does It Mean to Be LGBTQI+?
LGBTQI+ stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, Intersex, and "+" represents other sexual orientations and gender identities. Being part of the LGBTQI+ community means having a sexual orientation or gender identity that differs from the societal norm of being heterosexual or cisgender.
It's crucial to understand that being queer is not a choice; it is simply who someone is. Sexual orientation is an inherent aspect of their identity. By acknowledging this fact, we can foster an environment that promotes inclusivity and respect.
Tips for Supporting the LGBTQI+ Community
Educate Yourself
Take the initiative to learn about different sexual orientations and gender identities. Read books, watch documentaries, or attend workshops that provide insight into the experience of LGBTQI+ individuals.
Use Proper Terminology
Respect people's preferred pronouns (he/him, she/her, they/them) and avoid making assumptions based on appearance. If you're unsure about someone's pronouns, ask respectfully.
Be Mindful of Language
Avoid using derogatory slurs or offensive language when referring to LGBTQI+ individuals or their relationships. Words have power; choose your words carefully.
Listen with Empathy
Create a safe space for open conversations by actively listening without judgment or interruption. Validate others' experiences and emotions.
Support LGBTQI+ Friendly Spaces
Encourage businesses and organisations that are inclusive towards the LGBTQI+ community by patronising them or recommending their services. Once such space is Q Café, a well established cafe in the centre of Prague.
Be an Ally
Stand up against discrimination and prejudice whenever you witness it. Use your privilege to amplify the voices of marginalized communities. Read how to be an LGBTQI+ ally by visiting the Human Rights Campaign Foundation report.
