Associate Lecturer
School of Art & Design

Jiří Žák is an artist and researcher. He graduated with an MA from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and teaches for the Master's Fine Art programme at PCU.

He works primarily in the media of the moving image and video installation, merging research based practice with the narrative form. He addresses the identity of post-communist countries and its deconstruction through non-western perspectives.

Žák introduced his work at a number of independent galleries and institutions in the Czech Republic, and also internationally, e.g. at the Kiev Biennale 2021, the Warsaw Biennial 2018, at the Modern and Contemporary Art Centre in Debrecen in Hungary or at The Biennale Matter of Art Prague 2020.

He is a co-laureate of Jindřich Chalupecký Award 2020. In 2015, he became a holder of the EXIT Award. His work is featured in the collection of Prague City Gallery.

Žák completed art residencies at the Spring Sessions in Amman, Jordan, at the hablarenarte in Madrid, Spain and at the State Silk Museum in Tbilisi, Georgie.

Also, he was part of the Studio Without Master collective. Among others, Žák works for the online platform for contemporary art, the Artyčok TV.
