Theo Alexander: Residency at Britten Pears Arts

By Larissa Petryca on 23 October 2024

Theo Alexander Carnegy-Tan is an Associate Lecturer for the Fine Art Experimental Media programme, and specialises in teaching art history and critical studies. He has worked in numerous arts institutions in London and Prague, and as a composer, his music has been performed throughout Europe, Scandinavia, and the UK.

Residency at Britten Pears Arts

In November 2022, Theo was selected for a month-long residency at the Art Station / Britten Pears Arts Residency in Suffolk, UK. The residency, supports one artist annually, who works with sound or moving image, and is looking to expand their practice. In return the artist is given the space, time and equipment to experiment and explore new avenues of their creative practice.

During this period Theo conducted research and composed a long-form piece for bass clarinet, viola, and eight tape recorders that focused on themes of technology and control. The piece was rehearsed and later premiered at Snape Maltings and The Art Station (a former telephone exchange).

His piece drew loose inspiration from the life and work of scientific polymath John von Neumann, known for his contributions to early computing, weather prediction technology, and nuclear weapons. The music, presented as an "installed composition," blended site-specific art, choreography, and composition.
