Paul Chaney is a self-taught British artist whose work is concerned with sustainability and futurology, articulated through a mix of participatory and durational art practices, temporary architectures, and speculative design.

In this talk Chaney will present examples from two recent projects undertaken in the UK; FIELDCLUB – where he attempted to live in an off-grid cabin and grow his own food for seven years on a small farm designed by computer software, and Lizard Exit Plan – where he designed a system for 9,000 people to live outside of the system of global commerce on a secluded peninsular in Cornwall. Both projects explore post-capitalist and post-modern approaches to subsistence farming, and embrace the theorist Timothy Morton’s concept of dark ecology.

Chaney lives in Prague and is currently preparing for a solo show at Tranzitdisplay Gallery opening in December 2016.

Recent shows and events include: Critical Camps - public program at Kestle Barton Gallery, Cornwall, UK; The Ultimate Yarnwork, Bergan Kunsthall, Norway; Turborealism Breaking Ground, IZOLYATSIA Center for Cultural Initiatives - Donetsk, Ukraine; When Site Lost the Plot, Goldsmiths University, London, UK; Urban Ecologies, Muzeum Sztuki, Lodz, Poland; Garden Marathon, Serpentine Gallery, London, UK; Cities and (Velo)cities, De Markten, Brussels, Belgium; Second Autumn, Art Stations Poznan, Poland; Islands, g39, Cardiff, Wales, UK.
