Visiting Artist and Lecture Series: Milestones in Czech Type Design

by Alex Went, on 02 November 2015 13:32:14 CET

The art of type design is a fundamental part of Czech heritage. We are delighted to introduce two of its leading lights in the second of our Visiting Artist talks at Bishop's Court

Type design is an integral part of Czech cultural heritage. The 1990s brought about an explosion of experimental type designs — a trend that continues to the present day, best demonstrated in the work of our two speakers, Tomáš Brousil and Radek Sidun.

A graduate of the Prague Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Brousil founded Suitcase Type Foundry in 2003 to serve as an outlet for his creative work. He will discuss the development of his company and his contribution to a number of typographic projects.

He is joined by typographic designer Radek Sidun, who specializes in the design and use of diacritics in world languages. As a result of this very specialized expertise, Sidun is a sought-after consultant to international font designers and foundries, and has received several awards for his projects.

Together the two typographers were responsible for setting up Briefcase Type Foundry, digitizing previously unreleased typefaces and publishing the unique work of local designers, while keeping technical excellence in font design as their core value.

Both speakers are international experts in the field: Tomáš Brousil has been honoured for excellence in type design by the Type Directors' Club in New York, while Radek Sidun was the recipient of a Gold Award at the prestigious European Design (ED) awards in 2013.
