At this changing time in world history there is no better moment to be addressed by someone whose work has focused on the suffering brought by war, poverty and social upheaval.

After graduating from DAMU, Jarmila Štuková contributed to a number of documentaries for Czech Television. She spent three years as a reporter at the newspaper Lidove noviny, followed by two years at Isifa/Getty Images. Since then she has been working as a photographer and reporter on a freelance basis.

Jarmila is the co-founder of One Blood – a project documenting young followers of urban subculture across the world. Her stories have included the activities of break-dancers in the Gaza Strip, a young rapper from a slum in Uganda, a female boxer from Cambodia, skateboarders in Bangladesh and street artists in Iraq.

She has won multiple awards in the prestigious Czech Press Photo competition, not only for her photography from Ethiopia, Haiti and Iraq, but also for her documentaries about Afghani boys participating in parkour, and the victims of acid attacks in India.

She is currently working on a new project recording the stories of those fighting against Islamic State in Northern Iraq, which will form the focus of her Master Speaker lecture.
