Resonant Echos: a voice from Ukraine

by Larissa Petryca, on 13 February 2024 16:56:38 CET

In August, Prague City University held a unique exhibition in its Bishop's Court Studios. The event was organized by Jakub Grosz, a lecturer and PCU graduate, along with his artistic collaborator Jiří Vyskočil. Jakub is known for his expertise in creating interactive installations that make use of 3D technologies, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and 3D scanning and imaging technologies.

Journey to Ukraine

The pop-up exhibition emerged from a project that involved Grosz and Vyskočil visiting Ukraine where they held workshops with students from four universities across Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv to surface intimate and personal perspectives on the everyday reality of the ongoing war. The shared experiences and diverse inputs shaped a powerful immersive installation that deeply personalised the narrative of conflict and resilience of the people.

Exhibition

The resulting installation combined multiple projectors, VR headsets, real-time 3D sensors, sound and physical artworks into a multi-domain interactive experience marked with air raid alarms, metro announcements creating at times moments of pervasive anxiety. A physical dimension was added with military artefacts, repurposed as symbols of resilience, rebirth, and the need for happiness.

Curated by Václav Kasalický, the experience evoked a deep feeling of Ukraine's spirit and struggles, and concluded with an auction of artefacts to buy equipment and supplies urgently needed by frontline doctors.
