Visiting artist John Grzinich: 'Weather World'

by Alex Went, on 10 October 2018 00:00:00 CEST

Thursday 18 October 2018 | 6pm | Bishop's Court | Biskupsky Dvur 6

John Grzinich (US/Estonia) has worked since the early 1990s as an artist and cultural coordinator on projects combining sound, moving image, site-specificity, and collaborative social structures.  In this talk for the Prague College Visiting Artists and Lecture Series, he shares details of his working processes, and how his work relates to the media productions surrounding his current topics of interest: microcosms of culture and the environments of the North in conditions of a changing global climate.

Weather world: material realities through sound, image and place

'Over the years,' says Grzinich, ' I have collected a sizeable body of recordings (sound and video clips), many of which have found their way into various documents, installations and films. While the outcomes are works that can be shared and presented, it is the living process that I devote the most effort to. This process, which we can generally call 'field work', combines methods of observation, intervention and artistic creation that draws heavily on the cultural, material and meteorological aspects of the locations I work in.'

John has performed and exhibited in North America, Europe and Japan and his compositions have been published on a host of international labels. He lives in Estonia and works as a program coordinator for the artist-run centre MoKS.
