Jakub Grosz: Resonant Echoes

By Larissa Petryca on 25 October 2024

Jakub is an Associate Lecturer for the School of Art & Design and a graduate PCU’s MA Fine Art programme. He is known for his expertise in interactive installations using 3D, VR, AR, and 3D scanning technologies.

Resonant Echoes

In 2023, Jakub and his artistic collaborator Jiří Vyskočil traveled to Ukraine to conduct workshops with students from four universities across Kyiv, Dnipro, and Lviv. Their goal was to reveal intimate, personal perspectives on the daily realities of the ongoing war. The shared experiences and diverse insights from the students shaped Resonant Echo, a powerful immersive installation that personalises the narrative of conflict and resilience among the people.

Held in August at PCU’s Bishop’s Court studios and curated by Václav Kasalický, the installation combined multiple projectors, VR headsets, real-time 3D sensors, sound, and physical artworks into a multi-sensory, interactive experience. Layered with air raid alarms and metro announcements, it evoked moments of intense, pervasive anxiety. Military artefacts added a physical dimension and were repurposed as symbols of resilience, rebirth, and the need for happiness.

The experience overall evoked a deep feeling of Ukraine's spirit and struggles.
