Kateřina Šrahůlková from Prague City University's School of Education recently participated in an Erasmus+ exchange programme for university lecturers. The exchange took place at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas, Lithuania, where she engaged with fellow educators and contributed her expertise on several critical topics.
Collaborative Efforts and Shared Expertise
The Erasmus+ exchange programme is designed to foster cross-border educational cooperation and enhance the quality of teaching through shared knowledge and experiences. This collaboration provided a platform for exchanging best practices and innovative teaching methods, particularly in the realm of special education.
Kateřina's lectures focused on two significant areas: caring for individuals with special needs, especially autism, and teaching multicultural students from diverse backgrounds, including refugees. Her sessions were well-received by both students and faculty members, highlighting the importance of inclusive education practices that cater to the needs of all learners.
Focus on Special Needs & Multicultural Education
One of the pivotal aspects of Kateřina’s lectures was addressing the care for people with autism. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents unique challenges that require specialised approaches in education. By sharing her knowledge on this subject, Kateřina emphasised strategies for creating supportive learning environments that can accommodate autistic students' specific needs.
Another key focus area during Kateřina’s exchange was multicultural education. With increasing global mobility, classrooms are becoming more culturally diverse than ever before. Educators must be equipped to handle this diversity constructively and inclusively. Her lectures covered essential strategies for teaching multicultural students, including those who are refugees or come from various cultural backgrounds. Her discussions highlighted the significance of cultural sensitivity and adaptability in fostering an inclusive classroom environment where every student feels valued and understood.
Opportunities for PCU Students
This successful lecturer exchange underscores the value of international academic partnerships facilitated by programs like Erasmus+. It also opens doors for current PCU students pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Education: Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). These students have the opportunity to apply for Erasmus+ exchanges to partner universities such as Vytautas Magnus University.
