How to choose your path - interview with Jiri Michal

by Tamara Ayrapetova, on Nov 1, 2016 12:23:27 PM

This week we are pleased to interview Jiri Michal, until recently President of the Student Council, who succesfully completed his BA (Hons) in International Business Management at Prague College's School of Business and has now decided to continue his study at the College and pursue an MSc in International Management.

jiri-michal.jpgOne of the most important questions for any student is the extent to which the initial choice of programme and subjects match their passion and future career plans. Jiri, what have you enjoyed the most during your studies at HND and BA level?

JM: The ones I liked the most were definitely Economics/Finance/Statistics (e.g. Business Decision Making or BDM). These subjects were teasing the logical parts of my brain the most. When I came to PC all I knew and felt was that I wanted to study business. I had no idea what precisely, I was searching for the specific path I would like to follow, and I found it here. Some people are searching for their whole life for such a discovery. I was lucky enough to find it as early as my twenties.

And what are your future plans given your current passions in Finance and Economics?

JM: When you know what you want to do and the institution is able to help you on the way (which is where Prague College specifically stands out), it is quite simple to find out one's direction and follow it. I landed my first job in an international trading company, where I am working on my skills as a salesperson. Currently I am also acting as a floor manager, where I have a chance to develop my management and HR skills, as I am partly in charge of the interview process. In the meantime with the MSc I am focusing my studies on advanced finance and risk management, slowly preparing myself for achieving the CFA diploma with a view to following the banking/investment path in general.

Thank you for such a detailed answer. Why did you find it important to continue your studies in the MSc International Management programme and what has been the most beneficial part of this education for you?

JM: Quite honestly the most important part for me was having the chance to discuss with the heads and senior lecturers of the school my plans and ambitions. The finance field itself felt like such a complicated area, so talking with people experienced in that field and discussing the possibilities and realizing what it actually was I was looking for, has had a major impact. The MSc is a programme where I am allowed to chase my ambitions. I always set for myself very difficult goals on purpose, and the college is giving me all the tools, advice and support one might need and demand for the studies, the rest is up to my own diligence. Finally, based on my previous experiences with other institutions, to find a reputable institution, willing to help you, listen to you and furthermore slightly adjust according to what you desire, is as unique and priceless as a college can get.

We would like to thank Jiri Michal for this interview and for sharing with us his plans and thoughts about studying at Prague College School of Business. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavours and look forward to future interviews and cooperation.
