Guest Playlist Curator: Marawan - "MENA? Like The Actual Middle East?"

by Scy, on Jan 12, 2021 7:12:02 PM

Happy New Year! It's 2021, let's kick off this year with some beats from the Middle East. This week our Guest Playlist Curator is Marawan, who is from Egypt, Saudi Arabia & South Africa, but grew up in Al-Khobar, a city off the east coast of Saudi Arabia. Even though it is cold and snowy outside in Prague, wherever you are, this playlist is gonna bring you some fire to get all warmed up. So make sure to go over to the Prague College Spotify because this playlist is lit.

Marawan is in the first year of Prague College, studying graphic design. Next to that he designs graphics & motions for NASR eSports & ASMR eSports.

"Prague College has a really diverse community, this diversity is pretty interesting because the thing with music is, it's kind of a way to share cultures and influences, obviously not always, but there's something really fascinating about music acts that celebrate different cultures like Major Lazer for example.

I always had a thing for music and last year I had the opportunity to be a resident DJ at a local eSports zone. It makes me sound cool but in reality it was owned by a friend of mine and I went for fun to be honest and I'm not even that experienced.

I grew up in Al-Khobar, a pretty diverse city, probably one of the reasons that I grew up barely knowing any Arabic. I was never into Arabic music to be honest. It's not that I hated it, no, in fact I did like how the instruments sounded but I felt it's too much for my ears to transition from my 'go-to' music to Arabic, but then in 2013 this changed. In 2013 a show called CokeStudio was aired on TV where they basically bring two artists together (eastern & western) and do some sort of fusion between their top hits. I even had the chance to attend one of these episodes, as a 12 year old kid, to see Flo Rida perform live with a Lebanese singer Miryam Fares (I didn't know who she was back then lol). The way this sounded, even the Arabic parts, was so smooth, at that point I was sold. This kind of influenced me to always look out for music that is influenced by a certain culture. That perfect in between, was kind of hard to find until recently. During one of the sets that I performed at that eSports zone, a friend of mine recommended me a track to play that I never heard of before, neither of the artist: "Moghazi Intro" by Saud. Honestly I was hesitant to play that but once I did, I was lost for words. Hip-hop, Arabian and jazz sounds in one track, that's certainly exotic. So this playlist is dedicated to anyone like me who's like me into such "fusions", as I'd like to call them, whether you're Middle Eastern or not you'll certainly enjoy this."
