A team of faculty and students from Prague College will participate in an exhibition in the new building of the National Museum

The multidisciplinary M3K team will present two interactive installations, expressing two visions of future possibilities for multimedia interactive systems for museums and exhibitions, with strong focus on educational and narrative aspects.

The first part of the installation will demonstrate M3K’s approach to combining interactive media with the physical objects in a museum‘s collection. With suitable specimens and artefacts, recent developments in 3D mapping allow content to be projected directly onto the object itself, bringing the object to life. This approach enables a huge variety of information to be linked with the objects in a museum’s collection, adding sounds, movement and colour to otherwise static displays.

LIBAT M3K’s process is a step-by-step re-working of the museum’s existing displays, removing the need for extensive and time-consuming reconstruction and remodelling. Unlike traditional display-based interactivity, this method puts the physical collection back at the center of the exhibition. Our view is that interactive media should be an augmentation rather than a replacement of reality.

The second part of the installation illustrates LIBAT M3K’s wider ideas about the museum and it’s role on the internet. LIBAT M3K envisions a time when all museums have a digital archive of their collections, with 3D scans available online for the public to research, discuss, and enjoy. These 3D models can then come alive in fully interactive, multi-user environments, collaborative virtual worlds which reveal and recreate the living existence of an artefact or specimen.

Timespiral - Interactive Ammonite Installation

This Installation will allow users to navigate inside a graphically rich information system surrounding and incorporating a large ammonite. The information will be graphically linked to the object itself, showing the connections between different topics.

The content will include :

  • Basic Information (name, species, category, lifetime, age)
  • Location information (interactive occurrence map, migration maps...)
  • History (more detailed period info, history of studying species, historical illustrations and other visualizations)
  • Chemical information (main chemical data, interesting features, evolution data)
  • Biology (any important and interesting biological information)
  • Relevance of Exhibited Material to Larger Contexts (how this exhibited content functions within the larger fields of understadning i.e. Geology, Biology, or concepts such as Deep Time)

3D Environment Installation

The second installation for the National Museum will be an interactive 3D environment projected onto a wall or large screen for back projection. This environment can be linked to the first installation as a simulation of the natural habitat of the ammonite. The 3D underwater environment with plants or plankton will host 3D moving creatures. Users will navigate inside the environment with the possibility to intuitively select creatures or other elements to get graphical information directly in the 3D space. An overhead IR camera will track users’ movements in a specific area which will be translated into navigation in the 3D space. MS Kinect will be used to get touch events (selection).
